Laser Doppler flowmetry allows continuous real-time measurement of local microcirculatory blood flow. A 0.5- to 1-mm-diameter fiberoptic laser probe is placed in contact with or within brain tissue and conducts reflected light back to a photodetector within the flowmeter sensor.
