PerchCare

Overview
Wild animals instinctively hide signs of illness, and therefore weight is an important measurement of their health. However, traditional weight measurement methods cause extreme stress in wild birds, often resulting in fatalities while posing injury risks to caretakers. Through interviews with wildlife rescuers at the Gyeonggi Northern Wildlife Rescue Center, pain points were identified firsthand. Rescuers highlighted the challenges of handling birds during weight measurements, emphasising the need for a safer and less stressful solution. In response, PerchCare is a smart perch designed to simplify the weight-monitoring process for rescued birds. Instead of requiring the birds to be handled and restrained, PerchCare integrates a weighing function into a natural perch, allowing the birds to be observed organically without intervention or disruption. The system automatically collects weight data and provides real-time updates through an integrated lighting system and a dedicated chart app. PerchCare is designed for various bird species and offers multiple perch sizes. It also features a suction-based attachment that makes installation inside cages a breeze. By reducing caretaker workload and minimising animal stress, PerchCare increases rehabilitation success rates and the likelihood of safe release into the wild.
