Overview
This is a Japanese term that means "mistake-proofing" or "error prevention" to stop defects before they happen. Examples include: Prevention - design parts or tools so an action can only be done the correct way (like an asymmetric plug that only fits in one socket). Detection - spot an error right away and stop the workflow before a bad product is made. Warning - use lights or sounds to alert workers so they can fix a mistake fast.
