Overview
Mallet (MIDAR Augmented Low-cost Low-carbon Encapsulation Technique) is a technique for encapsulating Intermediate Level Waste (ILW). It uses Flash Sintering which is the process of compacting and forming a solid mass of material by heat or pressure without melting it. Flash Sintering uses a direct electric field, via electrodes, to a material body during the sintering process. Flash sintering occurs when an electric field is applied to a ceramic at a specific temperature. At this temperature, a sudden rise of the electrical conductivity takes place in the material. This so called 'flash event' leads to the rapid sintering of the material - hence the name, Flash Sintering.
