Pyrolitic Carbon Coatings

Overview
In this process, particles of high-level nuclear waste are coated and encapsulated in a material such as lead, which results in a multibarrier waste form. A tested method for coating ceramic cores is chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a fluidized bed. This technology has been previously demonstrated for high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) fuel particles. Thus, pyrolytic carbon (PyC) has been selected as a promising leach-resistant coating material.
